Drinks Part I
Strawberry Smoothies

The three cardinal ingredients are an overripe banana; yogurt, and orange juice.
Using that base, there are a number of variations you can do. Because strawberries are in season, I am going to add some. I am also going to add some ruby red grapefruit juice increase the complexity of the flavor and introduce a sour note. In addition, to jack up the health benefits of the drink, I'm adding some soy milk. And lastly, a few drops of vanilla for flavor. Actually, I always add vanilla.
Proportions:
1 overripe banana
1/2 cup yogurt
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup ruby red grapefruit juice
handful of strawberries
1/2 cup soy milk
few drops of vanilla
To make the drink, Gail uses a blender; I
use our food processor. Fit the food processor with the metal chopping
blade. Break or cut the banana into pieces, letting them fall into the
processor bowl. Put in the strawberries, pour in the orange juice, and
pulse a few times. Then put in all the other ingredients and process until
smooth. If desired, add ice to glasses; pour in the smoothie,
Variations:
1. Use pineapple juice in place of the grapefruit juice.
2. Use any fresh berries: raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and so forth.
3. If using a high quality blender to prepare the drink, at the end you can throw in some ice. It will crush and mix it into the drink.
